What Happens During a Professional Portrait or Headshot Session?

A professional portrait or headshot session should not feel like something you need to know how to do in advance. Most people are not used to being photographed professionally, so part of my job is to guide you through the process from the moment you arrive.

Before we begin, we will talk briefly about how the photographs will be used, the kind of look you want to achieve and any clothing or background choices we need to make. During the session I will guide you with posture, positioning and expression rather than expecting you to know how to pose.

I also show you selected photographs as we work, either on the camera or on a tethered screen, so you can see how the session is developing and we can make adjustments together if needed.

The aim is to make the whole experience clear, relaxed and collaborative, so that you know what is happening at each stage and can concentrate on looking and feeling like yourself.

Before the Session

Before the day of the session, we will usually have already discussed what the photographs are for, whether we are working in the studio or on location, and the general style you would like to achieve.

If you are unsure what to wear, you can send me a few quick photographs of the outfits you are considering, or bring several options with you. We can then decide what works best with your colouring, the background and the type of photographs we are creating.

It is also useful for me to know where the photographs will be used. A LinkedIn headshot, company website portrait, personal branding image and lifestyle portrait may all benefit from a slightly different approach.

The aim of this preparation is not to make the session complicated. It is simply to remove unnecessary uncertainty so that when you arrive, we already have a clear starting point.

If you would like more detailed guidance before your session, you can also read my guide to what to wear for a professional portrait or headshot and my guide to choosing between a studio or location portrait.

When You Arrive

When you arrive, we will take a few minutes to settle in and confirm what we want to achieve from the session. There is no need to walk straight in front of the camera.

We can look at the clothing options you have brought, decide which one to start with and make any final choices about background, lighting or location.

I will also explain how the session will run, so you know what to expect before we begin. If anything about the process is making you feel uncertain, this is the time to mention it.

The aim is to start calmly and make sure you feel comfortable before we begin photographing.

You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose

It is completely normal to feel a little unsure in front of the camera, especially if you have not had a professional portrait taken before. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose or what to do with your hands — that is something I will help you with throughout the session. My aim is to make the experience feel relaxed, unhurried and much easier than you may be expecting.

During the session I will guide you with posture, head position, shoulders, hands and body angle, making small adjustments rather than asking you to hold complicated poses.

The aim is to find positions that feel natural and look good on camera. What feels slightly unusual in front of the lens can sometimes photograph very well, so I will explain what I am changing and why.

For headshots and tighter portraits, small changes can make a significant difference. A slight adjustment to the chin, shoulders or angle of the body can improve the shape of the portrait without making you feel posed.

The process is collaborative, and we can adjust anything that does not feel comfortable or does not suit the way you want to be represented.

Building Natural Expressions

A good portrait is not just about posture. Expression is usually what makes the photograph feel convincing, and that can take a little time to settle into.

I do not expect you to produce the same fixed smile for every frame. We will work through small changes in expression, eye contact and head position so the photographs feel natural rather than forced.

Sometimes the strongest image comes from a very subtle expression rather than a broad smile. At other times, a warmer or more animated look may suit the purpose of the photograph better.

I will guide you through those variations and keep the session moving so you are not left wondering what expression to make. The aim is to create a range of photographs that still look like you, but with enough variety to choose the ones that feel strongest and most appropriate.

Seeing the Photographs During the Session

During the session I will show you selected photographs on the tethered computer so you can see how the images are developing as we work.

We will usually pause once the lighting, pose and expression are beginning to come together. This gives you a chance to see how you look on camera and allows us to discuss anything you particularly like or would prefer to adjust.

As the session progresses, I may show you further images after a change of clothing, background, lighting or pose. This helps us compare the different looks and decide which direction is producing the strongest results.

I do not stop to review every photograph, because that would interrupt the flow of the session. Instead, I use these short reviews at useful points so that you can see the progress, feel involved in the process and know that we are creating photographs you are comfortable with.

Changing Clothing and Lighting

During the session we may change clothing or adjust the lighting to create different looks, but the background will normally have been chosen in advance as part of the planning.

Keeping the background consistent allows the session to flow more smoothly and avoids unnecessary waiting while equipment is moved or setups are rebuilt.

A change of clothing can make the portrait feel more formal, relaxed or personal, while small changes in lighting can alter the mood and the way the face is shaped.

Any adjustments are made with a clear purpose, so the session remains efficient and you are not left waiting while unnecessary changes are made.

What Happens After the Session

After the session, I will review the photographs and prepare a private proof gallery for you to view in your own time.

The proof gallery allows you to choose the photographs you would like me to finish professionally rather than having me make every decision for you. You can compare expressions, poses and different looks and select the images that feel strongest to you.

Your portrait or headshot session includes 8 professionally edited final photographs. If you decide that you would like additional images from the proof gallery, these can also be professionally finished for you.

Once you have made your selections, I will move on to the final editing and retouching stage before preparing the finished photographs for delivery.

Professional Editing and Retouching

Once you have chosen your final photographs, I will complete the editing and retouching process.

My approach is to keep the result natural. I will refine colour, contrast and overall balance, remove temporary distractions where appropriate and make careful adjustments to the skin while preserving natural texture and character.

The aim is not to make you look like a different person. Good retouching should help the photograph look polished without drawing attention to the editing itself.

I also make sure the finished images are consistent as a set, so that colour, brightness and overall presentation work well together across your chosen photographs.

Receiving the Final Photographs

Once the final editing is complete, your selected photographs will be supplied digitally in both high-resolution and web-ready versions.

The high-resolution files are suitable for printing and other uses where maximum image quality is important. The web-ready versions are prepared for online use, making them easier to use for LinkedIn, company websites, personal branding, social media and other digital platforms.

Supplying both versions means you do not need to worry about resizing the photographs yourself for different uses.

If you are unsure which version to use for a particular purpose, I can advise you.

Common Questions About the Session

What if I feel nervous in front of the camera?

That is very common. You do not need any experience in front of the camera, and I will guide you throughout the session. We will take the time to settle in, and I will help with posture, expression and positioning so you are not left wondering what to do.

Do I need to know how to pose?

No. I will guide you with small adjustments to your body angle, shoulders, head position, hands and expression. The aim is to keep the process simple and create photographs that feel natural rather than over-posed.

Can I see the photographs while we are shooting?

Yes. During the session I will show you selected images on the tethered computer so you can see how the photographs are developing. This gives us a chance to discuss what is working and make any useful adjustments as we go.

Do I choose the final photographs?

Yes. After the session you will receive a private proof gallery so you can choose the images you would like me to finish professionally.

How much retouching is included?

The final photographs are professionally edited and retouched with a natural approach. I refine colour, contrast and overall balance, remove temporary distractions where appropriate and make careful adjustments to the skin while preserving natural texture and character.

What if I want more than the 8 included photographs?

Additional photographs can be selected from your proof gallery and professionally finished for you. Extra edited images are currently available at €20 each.

A Guided Session From Start to Finish

A professional portrait or headshot session should feel straightforward rather than intimidating. From choosing what to wear through to selecting your final photographs, I will guide you through each stage so you are never left wondering what you are expected to do.

The session itself is relaxed and collaborative. I will help with posture and expression, show you photographs as we work on the tethered computer and make adjustments where they will improve the result.

Afterwards, you can choose your preferred photographs from the private proof gallery before I complete the final editing and retouching.
